New York City Periodontist Information on Sedation Dentistry?

To help patients relax in a dental treatment, sedation dentistry is often used.  This is specially designed for people who are very afraid of going to the dentist, especially if they need a number of intricate procedures done. Over a third of people have a phobia of the dentist, which is why sedation can be used to provide comfort and relaxation. This is a very common fear, even for routine procedures, causing many people to avoid up keeping their oral hygiene.

Sedation is used to provide calm and relaxation by administering sedatives to the patient. Some of the sedatives that can be used are anti-anxiety medications, tranquilizers, and nitrous oxide.  In the past, many patients received their sedatives through an IV, but nowadays, there are options through inhalation, similar to laughing gas. These methods are preferred by many people who do not want to use an injection for their sedative.

Modern dentistry has advanced today to currently use oral sedatives.  This is a very simple form of sedative that does not use a needle but provides immediate relaxation to the patient.  An oral sedative can be used so that the patient feels asleep throughout their procedure. However, oral sedation actually maintains a slight level of consciousness for cooperation and safety, although the patient will not remember the treatment.

Oral sedation is a different method than using anesthesia, which is a common practice during surgery. Some types of sedation can actually increase your pain threshold, which is why many dental treatments will still use an injected local anesthetic into the mouth to perform the treatment. This local anesthetic will work to prevent pain in the mouth after injection while the patient is sedated.  Again, due to the sedation, the patient will not remember having a local anesthetic injected into their gums.

If you are undergoing sedation dentistry, it is important to have a friend or family member go with you to the treatment to be able to drive you home and care for you after your appointment. Also, make sure that your caregiver stays with you a few hours after your treatment to make sure that you are safe as you recover.

Within sedation dentistry, it provides a number of benefits because many people feel that the entire dental treatment only lasts for several minutes instead of several hours. This can often be used for rebuilding treatments, cosmetic dentistry, and smile makeovers that are often performed over multiple visits. This also provides the advantage in that the patient can have more work done at one time instead of undergoing several appointments.  Sedation dentistry is safe and effective through a professional dental practice!
