When Did It Happen?

To figure out what is causing your dry mouth, it is often helpful to try to remember when your dry mouth  symptoms started.  If you can determine when they started then you can start thinking about other changes you  made in life around the same time.  Maybe you started taking a new medication.  Maybe you sustained an injury  or got sick.  The answer may or may not be obvious, but this can help you come up with some possible causes  for your dry mouth.

Run Some Tests

You don’t have to go to the hospital to run a quick test to  see if something simple is really causing your dry mouth. So if you think a new medication might be causing  it, you can talk to your physician about changing medications or lowering your dosage. Now, if your dry mouth  symptoms go away, then you know that was the real source. If you have been sick, check if the dry mouth  resolves itself once you get better. Remember, you may not always be able to determine the cause of your dry  mouth this way or to test it like this, however if it is something basic then just fix the problem and see if  the dry mouth is fixed with it.

If you have no idea, then run down the list of common dry mouth causes.

Are you drinking enough water?  Try drinking more.

Are you smoking or using chewing tobacco? Stop doing both.

Are you drinking alcohol or caffeinated beverages? Stop doing that too.
